HIV Infection
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection causes acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Semen is the main vehicle for the transmission of HIV. Semen contains amyloid aggregates called SEVI (semen-derived enhancer of virus infection) made of the proteins PAP and SEM1/2, which enhance viral infectivity 10 times or more. Therefore, inhibition of formation of these protein aggregates may reduce HIV infection.
