Familial Parkinson’s Disease
(FPD) is responsible for ~15% of all PD cases. It can be caused by mutations in multiple genes, and many of these genes are not directly related to abnormal protein aggregation. Very rare mutations in, or multiplications of, the SNCA gene, which is responsible for production of α-synuclein, lead to increased production or aggregation of α-synuclein and cause FPD.
