Corticobasal degeneration (CBD) is a rare, progressive neurodegenerative disease involving the cerebral cortex and the basal ganglia. It is characterized by substantial movement disorder together with cognitive dysfunction. Though it is classified as a “Parkinson plus” syndrome, it is a tauopathy, which means that it is characterized by accumulation of abnormal tau aggregates in the brain. Clinical diagnosis of CBD is difficult because symptoms often overlap with those of Parkinson’s disease and progressive supranuclear palsy.
